Highlights of the Festival

FUN: Children’s Activities, Old-Fashioned Games from the Turner-Dodge House, Hiking, and Exploring.

CULTURE AND EDUCATION: Native American Activities, Heirloom Apple Tasting, Log Sawing (Boy Scout Troop 180, Hiking, Guided Nature Walks.

HERITAGE CRAFT DEMONSTRATIONS AND SALES: Mason Basket Weavers Guild (Sat only), Greater Lansing Pottery Guild, Capital City Quilt Guild, Rag Rugs, Capital Area Lace Makers, Hand-made brooms, Copper Pot Making, French Garden Creations, and more.

MUSIC: Folk Musicians (arranged by Art Cameron and Ben Hassenger) Will Be Performing throughout the Weekend on the Outdoor Stage. Please see the schedule below.

The music of Hall & Morgan is Americana with contemporary touches, featuring strong vocal harmonies & a multitude of instruments. Their sound is intimate and down-home.

2:30 - Ben Hassenger
Ben is an songwriter, educator, and citizen of the world. His songs range from the silly to the sensitive and he entertains with an enthusiastic vigor on guitar and ukulele. Celebrate the Earth!: Nature Camp for Kids

Earth Day, April 22, is the annual U.S. celebration of the environment and a time to assess the work still needed to protect the natural gifts of our planet. In that spirit I’ve compiled a few of the upcoming programs for children to explore nature.

Harris Nature Center Summer Camp 2010 Programs
Harris Nature Center, 3998 Van Atta Road, urges youngsters to "Make the Nature Connection" this summer through a variety of camps for toddlers through fifth graders beginning June 15 and running through Aug. 6. Students going into eighth grade and above are invited to volunteer as assistant camp counselors. This year, there will be one-day camps and four-day camps. This summer Woldumar’s camps will have several discovery camps. Woldumar strives to provide fun, educational, and safe experiences for all summer campers. All of the classes now run Monday through Friday. Zookambi kids can attend a morning class, an afternoon class, or both. Potter Park looks forward to making this summer full of fun, discovery and learning about the animal kingdom with your child. Campers will explore Burchfield Park's 540 acres - from woods to wetlands and participate in hands-on activities that will help them learn more about the natural world surrounding them. Scheduled Birdwalks in Lansing

Walk the trails of Fenner Nature Center Saturday mornings to observe the spring migration through Lansing.

Saturday walks are led by Capital Area Audubon Society volunteers. All walks are free and no registration is required.

Fenner Nature Center's Maple Syrup Festival

Celebrate Spring’s Return at Fenner Nature Center’s
MAPLE SYRUP FESTIVAL
Saturday & Sun March 20 & 21, 11am to 4pm

After an especially long and cold winter, the occurrence of this year’s vernal equinox is something to celebrate. Fenner’s annual event features more stuff to do than ever!
Here are some of the FREE activities planned:

~Maple syrup demonstrations
~Guided bird walks
~Nesting box exhibit
~Wildlife artists and crafters
~Face-painting and kids’ crafts
~More food and drink, including maple sugar products, for sale

Bugs of the World

LIVE AT FENNER NATURE CENTER
Did you know that cricket’s ears are on its knees? Or that a fly has taste buds on its feet? Come visit Fenner Nature Center to learn all about bugs.

The MSU Bug House will be bringing both live and pinned specimens.

Register at the door, which will open a half-hour before the show. Seating is limited.

Live Bats at Fenner Nature Center

  • 1:30-2:30 for young kids
  • 3:00-4:00 for older kids.
  • Register at the door, which opens a 1/2 before show.
  • Fees $5.00/person & $15.00/family

Bats common in Michigan are insectivorous, catching small flying insects, by echolocation. Some bats consume up to one-half their weight of insects in a night. On November 1, a show from the Organization for Bat Conservation at the Cranbrook Institute of Science will arrive at Fenner Nature Center with big and little bats from all over the world. Meet their bat-man. Wear your costume, stop in at our gift shop and receive a coupon towards a purchase. A prize will be awarded to the battiest guest.
