Rare and Unique Birds

Author: Bobica Alexandru
Would you believe that there are over 10,000 types of birds all over the world? Birds are some of the most extraordinary creatures on the planet, and unlike humans, birds have wings and feet to carry them to their destinations. However, this is not the only thing that makes them such remarkable creatures. They have a variety of physical abilities, some intelligence has been implied and some of them have rapport with us humans. Let's take a look at some of these astounding creatures.
One of the rarest birds in the world is the black faced honey creeper or Po'ouli. This bird was first discovered in Hawaii in the year of 1973, and since that discovery, their population seems to be declining. In fact, in the late 90s, a survey reported only three of these birds being left, and they all live in different locations. Scientists believed that out of those that were left, there appeared to be two females and one male. In 2004, one of them was captured to be used for mating, but died of malaria before the process could be carried out. Since then, the other two have not been discovered. The po'ouli is described as having a black face, brownish upper body, and whitish lower body. Do you think we will ever see them again?
Another amazing bird that'll get your attention is the ivory-billed woodpecker. This bird is one of the largest birds of its kind; estimated at about 30 inches in wingspan and 20 inches long. This is also another rare bird that leaves scientists wondering if they even still exist. This bird is a native of North America and is described as having a reddish-black head, black body and white patches on its neck and wings. Because of the destruction of its habitat, the old-growth forests in the southeast during the 1800s, the population of this species quickly declined. Native Americans used the bills of these birds as decorations and for trade and since 2005 no one has been able to locate any of them.
One of the earliest known birds that scientists still debate on whether or not it's a bird at all is the Archaeopteryx. Based on a fossil that was found in China, scientists believed that this bird may actually have been a birdlike dinosaur. This bird was a native of Germany over 150 million years ago, but according to the fossils that were found, this was one of the most unique birds you'd ever seen. Speaking of unique, this bird had feathers, teeth, three claws on each of its wings, and a wishbone. It had bird and dinosaur like characteristics and was considered to be the first bird during the Jurassic period. Even today, scientists are still left confused about whether or not this bird was actually a bird, and over the years, they've only had ten body fossils that were found near Germany and a feather to help them with their study.
