Parakeet Care

Author: goodmast3r
The Parakeet is a small parrot found throughout the drier parts of Australia. They are intelligent, type of social animal and enjoy playing with their toys and interact with humans and other Parakeets. Parakeets are nomadic birds which can be found in open habitats, primarily in Australian scrubland. They feed on the grass weeds and seeds of spinifex. Parakeets do preening to remove dirt and dust from their feathers. They show signs of affection to the other Parakeet by preening or feeding them. Parakeets like to help each other by cleaning each other hard-to-reach spots.
Here are characteristic of Parakeets:
Wild Parakeets has green body, black edged in yellow for their mantle (back and wing coverts). They are smaller than those in captivity. Adult has yellow in the forehead and face Young Parakeet has barred black with yellow in the forehead and face until they change into their adult color at 3-4 months of age. Cheek has a small dark purple patch and 3 black spots across each sides of their throats The Parakeet is the most common pet parrot in the world. One of the reason is they are not expensive, usually between 10-30 dollars. They have been bred in captivity since the 1850s. Breeders have worked over the decades to produce a various color, pattern, and feather mutations. Parakeets can be taught to produce sound / speak. Both males and females can sing and learn to mimic sounds & words. But males produced much better pronounced sound than the females. If kept as a single pet, they will talk more. They live an average of five to ten years. It all depends of the level of care, and their health. Wild parakeet will usually live longer. It is recommended by avian veterinarians to feed your bird with fresh fruits and vegetable, whole grain bread, other healthy human foods, and pellets which is formulated for small parrots. This food will provide additional nutrients, and prevent obesity. For female parakeets you should give them cuttlebone. They will like to chew it, which come from their instinct to build nest. Cuttlebone will keep their beaks clean and trimmed.
